Ave Fua I Aho e 4–7

A solid bronze bell with one clear, bright note. Cast in a single piece, with an open loop that hangs anywhere — a door handle, a cupboard knob, a blind cord, a bag strap — or nowhere at all, standing quietly on a shelf.

The cast relief burnishes brighter the more you handle it, and there is nothing to charge, pair, or replace. 5.2 cm tall.

  • Solid bronze, single-piece casting
  • One clear note, struck by hand
  • Open loop hangs on almost anything
  • 5.2 cm te maualuga

Fakamatalaga puupuu

Almost everything that hangs in a house is silent: the tag on the cupboard door, the toggle on the blind, the fob on the bag by the stairs. You touch them a dozen times a day and none of them gives anything back.

Dew is a different kind of object. It is cast from solid bronze in one piece, crown, body and loop together, 5.2 cm tall and clearly heavier in the hand than it looks. A bell rings because it is solid metal throughout, so it answers with one clear, bright note whenever it moves. Hang it on a door handle and the door announces itself. Put it on a cupboard knob, a blind cord, a bag strap or a keyring and the same happens there. Or leave it standing on a shelf, where it is simply a small, dense, well-cast object worth picking up.

Tauhiga

There is almost nothing to do. A dry cloth is all it needs when it gathers dust. Leave the antiqued finish alone and let it develop: over a year, the lip and the top of the dome turn brighter and warmer wherever hands and hardware touch them, while the recesses stay dark. That growing contrast is what the finish is meant to do.

Mea na Faia Ai

Solid bronze, a real copper alloy cast right through and not a plated shell, finished with an antiqued patina that is dark in the relief and bright on the raised rim and shoulder.

  • Casting: crown, scroll prongs and loop cast as one solid piece with no solder joins
  • Clapper: a small steel clapper inside
  • Size: one size, 5.2 cm tall, approx. 2.5 cm mouth, just under 30 g
  • Fit: the open loop takes any standard 20–25 mm keyring, bag clip or leather thong

A door, a cupboard, a bag or a shelf

Hang it anywhere you like

On a door handle, so that the door announces itself. On a cupboard knob, a wardrobe pull, a blind cord, a garden gate, a bag strap or a keyring. The loop is left open on purpose, so it threads onto whatever you already have. Wherever it hangs it does the same thing: it turns a movement you would not have noticed into one clear note. Many are never hung at all and simply stand on a shelf, looking as if they cost far more than they did.

5.2 cm of solid bronze

Small and heavier than it looks

It is no taller than a house key and weighs just under 30 g, but it is cast solid all the way through, so it has the density of something twice its size. That weight also explains the sound: solid metal carries a clear note, where a pressed hollow shell only clicks.

It ages well

The wear becomes the finish

Bronze burnishes wherever it is handled. After a year the lip and the dome turn a bright honey colour while the beaded relief stays dark, so the bell is marked by where you kept it and how often you touched it. It cannot be bought in that condition.

On the back door

Hung it on the handle of the back door and now the house tells me when someone comes in or out. The note is bright and short rather than a clang — it sounds once and it is gone. The casting is sharper than I expected too, you can feel every bead of the pattern with a thumbnail.

Ended up on a shelf

Bought it for a bag strap and it never got there — it sits in the hallway next to a clay pot and looks like it cost a great deal more than it did. Picking it up is half the point, it is far denser than a 5 cm object has any right to be. Rings beautifully if you tip it.

Four months on a bag strap

Mine hangs off a bag strap, so I hear it the second I pick the bag up. It has been out in a lot of weather and the bronze has only gone warmer and brighter along the lip. The cast loop has not moved a millimetre.

Where is it usually hung?
Door handles are the most common place, because the door announces itself when it moves. After that come cupboard and wardrobe knobs, blind and light cords, garden gates, bag straps and zip pulls, and keyrings. The loop is left open on purpose so that it threads onto whatever you already have, including any standard 20–25 mm ring, clip or leather thong. A good number are never hung and simply live on a shelf or a desk.
He a tona lahi moni?
About as long as a house key: 5.2 cm tall, roughly 2.5 cm across the mouth and just under 30 g, in one size. It is cast solid and not pressed, so it feels heavier in the hand than the measurements suggest.
What does it sound like?
Bright and high: one clear note that carries across a room and fades in about a second. It is a small bell, so it announces and does not ring out. You can hear a door move from another room, and the sound is gone before it becomes a noise.
Is outdoor hanging suitable?
Yes. Bronze is a copper alloy that has been used outdoors for centuries. On a garden gate, a shed door or a porch it simply weathers to a deeper tone. The arched loop, the crown and the body are one solid piece with no soldered joins, so there is no seam for weather or a ring to wear through.
Will the dark patina rub off?
The antiqued finish lies in the recesses of the relief, where hands do not reach, so it stays where it is. The raised surfaces change: the lip, the shoulder and the loop burnish brighter and warmer with handling. The longer you have it, the greater the contrast.
